The Joomla! Users Group of Northern Virginia held its second meeting June 17, 2009. Five members attended at the home of Bruce Scherzinger for two hours. After some administrative discussion regarding the status of the group, future meetings, current membership, and the website, topics discussed included a talk by Joe LeBlanc on migration from a Joomla! 1.0 site to 1.5 and how to keep a Joomla! website secure.
Bruce's Notes:
com_migrator by Sam Moffatt
- Install component on 1.0 site
- Creates an SQL file to run on 1.5 site
- Endorsed by the core team
- Has its own plugin architecture
- Allows extension migrator scripts to be added
- Downside is that the plugins run during install
- Failures necessitate reinstallation and remigration of the site
com_mtwmigrator by Matias Aguirre
- Install 1.5 site barebones
- Install mtwmigrator on 1.5 site
- Enter DB info for 1.0 site
- Pulls 1.0 DB data into new site
- Supported:
- Community Builder
- Drawbacks:
- Website is in Spanish (Argentina)
- Joomla 1.0 and 1.5 sites may need to be on the same server
- Doesn’t handle ETL plugins written for com_migrator
General 1.5 Site/Migration Guidelines:
- Both tools above allow selection of extensions to migrate
- Can use a combination of both tools if necessary
- Image files can be copied in multiple steps using overwriting sequences
- Many 1.5 extensions now have upgrade paths
- some support use of one or both tools
- DON’T USE LEGACY PLUG-IN
- it will significantly degrade the site's performance
- Joomla 1.6 will not include it
- Joomla 1.0 EOL is August 2009
